He began his public service career at age 19 when he was elected Long Creek Township Clerk in 1985 — the youngest elected township official in Illinois at the time. He served 35 years at the Township Officials of Illinois, including 25 years as Executive Director/CEO, and 18 years as an elected member of the Macon County Board. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from Millikin University.

County Clerk candidate Bryan Smith attended the Empowering the Total Man Breakfast on Saturday, March 7th presented by Love from the Heart Foundation. Antwane McClelland Sr., invited Smith to attend and speak. Several other speakers addressed the attendees including Calvin Carson, Rev. James McFarland, Chad Faith, and Rev. Wayne Dunning. The event was held at the Salvation Army Community Center in Decatur.
